After a recent fire outbreak at the new female hostel of Yobe State University, Vice Chancellor Professor Mala Mohammed Daura reassured parents and guardians about the well-being of their children at the university.
In a briefing with journalists on Friday, he shared that the university management is actively supporting the students affected by the disaster through a dedicated committee.
Professor Daura praised the committee’s transparency and its regular updates to the Vice Chancellor’s office, ensuring proper communication regarding the situation and the affected students.
He acknowledged that the current accommodations for the affected students are temporary and mentioned plans for more permanent solutions.
“We have a building that has not been completed, so we went and made a survey and proposal to the state government to complete the construction of that building,” Daura explained.
The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the support received from various entities, including government bodies, non-governmental organizations, investment companies, ministries, the state Assembly, the National Assembly, corporate organizations, and individuals.
To assist the affected students, the university management has provided over one thousand pieces of notebooks and writing materials.
Additionally, they are supplying condiments and ingredients for cooking food three times a day, with support from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), which has provided foodstuffs.
Professor Daura expressed gratitude to the state fire service, security personnel, and members of the communities for their assistance and support during and after the incident.
